{"id":355,"date":"2012-02-03T04:08:44","date_gmt":"2012-02-03T09:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/?p=355"},"modified":"2012-02-04T14:28:34","modified_gmt":"2012-02-04T19:28:34","slug":"westmoreland-mary-gregory-perhaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/?p=355","title":{"rendered":"Westmoreland Mary Gregory &#8211; perhaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry for the long post, but this is pretty interesting. \u00a0 \u00a0I bought this piece in the U.S last year. \u00a0It is very thin glass and has a few chips around the rim. \u00a0I normally wouldn&#8217;t buy anything with chips but I have long wanted to buy a piece of &#8220;Mary Gregory&#8221; and they can be pricey. \u00a0I gather there are lots of knockoffs. \u00a0I do not know the provenance of my glass, but I do like it. \u00a0This is all from Wikipedia \u00a0&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Gregory<\/strong>\u00a0(1856\u20131908) was an\u00a0<a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">American<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Glass painter (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Glass_painter&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">glass painter<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a title=\"Boston and Sandwich Glass Company\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_and_Sandwich_Glass_Company\">Boston and Sandwich Glass Company<\/a>,\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0 <strong>(I&#8217;ve been there &#8211; Wikipedia doesn&#8217;t know that)<\/strong> who helped popularize glass-painting. \u00a0She was known for her paintings of Victorian era children, and such<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/045.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-321\" title=\"Mary Gregory - perhaps\" src=\"https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/045-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/045-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grannysglasses.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/045-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>artwork has been referred to as\u00a0<em>Mary Gregory<\/em>\u00a0since the 1920s. However, \u00a0the artworks were likely from an earlier era, and the term was probably the result of marketing by the Westmoreland Glass Company. The glass most likely came from Europe. Despite this, many glass art enthusiasts continue to refer to such pieces as <em>Mary Gregory<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Westmoreland Glass Company of\u00a0\u00a0Pennsylvania\u00a0began marketing their glasswork as\u00a0<em>Mary Gregory<\/em>\u00a0in the 1920s. They would create glass paintings of Victorian era children in profile, and say it was done in the &#8220;style&#8221; of Mary Gregory. Westmoreland artists painted the white silhouettes on black milk glass plates, vases, glass boxes, etc. In the 1970s they also painted these scenes on blanks that they called Blue Mist \u2013 a semi-opaque glass with a\u00a0baby blue\u00a0tint to it.
