Heisey Empress Lemon Bowl With Hughes Corn Flower Cutting

It’s hard to see that this piece is yellow.

I was so happy to find this on our local Facebook Marketplace.  I recognized the cutting as Hughes’ Corn Flower but I didn’t recognize the line.

I posted an ID request on the Vintage Glass Identification group on Facebook.  The line was IDed very quickly as Heisey’s Empress line.  I should have known that!

This is the bottom of the lemon dish in Heisey Sahara (yellow).  Don’t know if I will ever find the lid, but who cares?  It’s a gorgeous little piece.  I have started a collection of Corn Flower in coloured glass.  So far my collection is limited to pink, amber, and red/clear.  I am sorry that I have sold the pieces that I used to have in Heisey in Hawthorne.

Ran into another green piece this weekend.  A little salad plate, provenance unknown.  I no longer have the console, so can’t recall the exact colour.  The photo below looks dark, but in actuality I don’t think it was dark, although I am not sure if the two pieces are the exact same shade of green.

Corn Flower Green ConsoleI was very surprised to walk into the local St. Vincent de Paul shop to find this beautiful console bowl with the Corn Flower cutting.  I have never seen, in the wild, a piece cut with Corn Flower in any colour other than pink, hawthorne (Heisey) or the pilseners with the red bases.  Definitely never the green.

I don’t know the glass maker.   A photo of this piece shows up in Walter T. Lemiski’s book Elegant Glass with Corn Flower but does not indicate the provenance.

Very pretty.

 

New Martinsville # 4554 Janice Candle Holder / Candleholder with Hughes’ Corn Flower Cutting

One of the best reference set purchases I’ve made was to buy the three volume set of The Glass Candlestick Book by Tom Felt and Elaine & Rich Stoer.  The first thing I do when I acquire a candlestick holder is to look for it in one of these books.  Works from the major American glass companies are included.

Volume 3 lists this piece as New Martinsville’s #4554 0- Janice.  It was originally made circa 1940-1970 in crystal and reissued later in crystal and pink.

According to the Canadian Identification & Price Guide to W.J. Hughes Corn Flower Glass by Krista A. Taylor, the Hughes’ cutting could have been carried as early as the 1930s.

There is a bit of a discrepancy between the dating of these pieces between the books.

Regardless of its age it is a pretty piece.
