New Martinsville / Viking Glass “Princess” Relish Dish

I generally no longer buy any pieces with the Corn Flower cutting as it is so plentiful in our part of Ontario.  But I hadn’t seen this relish dish before.

This is the “Princess” line of New Martinsville Glass, later the Viking Glass Company. The cutting was done by W. J. Hughes Corn Flower Ltd. of Ontario, Canada from the 1930s-1979.

My daughter bought me a great book by author Krista Taylor – Canadian Identification & Price Guide to W.J. Hughes Corn Flower Glass.  It is informative and has a number of unusual pieces in it.  Ms. Taylor mentioned that the older pieces of the Princess line were decorated with more flowers and leaf sprays and that pieces produced after 1950 tend to have less cutting (p. 212).

I have to assume, if this is true that this is a more recent piece.  There is only one flower and on spray on it.

Viking Ruby Jar (4)It is always handy when the label is still attached to an item.  I wouldn’t have guessed the manufacturer of this jar otherwise.

Don’t know if it was intended to be a candy jar, but it is a good size for that.  Also handy for cotton balls, Q-tips, etc….or just pretty for display.

The shape of the jar, the details of the lid make this attractive.  Also interesting is the yellow tint of the lid when exposed to light.Viking Ruby Jar (3)

Viking Prelude Sherberts (2)And yet again…..I’ve never seen Prelude stemware.  Came across these stems – oysters, fruit cocktails, whatever, dViking Prelude Sherberts (3)uring my recent trip to Washington and Virginia.  I am still not a fan of this etch, but I like the stemware more than the serving pieces.

I’ve shown this etch before, but this is such a pretty shape that I thought it worth showcasing.  The pattern was originally made by the New Martinsville Glass Manufacturing Company of West Virginia, starting in the 1930s.  The company was bought out by the Viking Glass Company which continued to produce the etch into the ’50s.

I have a couple different bon bon dishes.  I really don’t use them and they are stuck somewhere in a drawer, or even in a box.  One thing about this glass obsession….I don’t really enjoy all my pieces as I can’t possibly have them all out to be seen!  I don’t really fancy this etch all that much, although I don’t really know why, and even though I have the two pieces, will likely not buy any more.  I tend to focus on stemware now, but of course I’d never say never about buying anything!
