Pink / Rose Central Glass Works Water Goblets – Line 1426

Although yesterday was sunny and I SHOULD have been out in my garden I decided to take a long overdue drive into Around the Block.  They had a great deal of beautiful ‘new’ cut glass.  I wish I knew more about cut glass history and patterns.  My visit to the Dorflinger Glass Museum with its beautiful pieces was very inspiring.

I picked up this pretty quartet of pink water goblets.  Central Glass Works’ line #1426.  Lovely, obvious diamond optic with the twisted, spiral stem.

The reference in Schmidt’s book – Glass Works: the Depression Era – indicates that Tiffin and Bryce also made similar stems, although he thinks that Bryce’s line was only in crystal.  I am going with these as Central’s pieces, but will happily stand corrected.

Schmidt says that this line was also produced in crystal, green and combinations of crystal and colour.

Although pink glass ware isn’t my favourite (I like crystal or cobalt) these are very appealing.

This pretty piece is Central’s Line #2005 with Etch #401 – Harding.

Tin Schmidt’s book – Central Glass Works: the Depression Era – has some interesting information about the line and etch.  He says that the original name for the etch, created in the mid to late teens of the twentieth century was “Dragon”.  But….:

“When President Harding, under pressure from the American Glass producers, wisely decided to use American made glassware on the tables of the White House for State Dinners, the pattern known as #401 received its historical name, Harding.”

Mr. Schmidt reminds us that the Griffins face each other in the etch and that their tongues are out lapping up water spraying from the fountain.  If the Griffins are turned away, then this is likely Tiffin’s etch ‘Eldorado’.

green-etched-compoteIsn’t this a pretty colour?  A very deep, rich green.  I don’t know if it has a more descriptive name for this particular tint.

I don’t know the name of the etch.  I have to take a clearer photo of it and repost on the  Elegant & Everyday Glass Forum.

According to my only book on Central – Central Glass Works: the Depression Era by Tim Schmidt – line 2005 came in many pieces of tableware and in many colours. Rose, amber, orchid tints and crystal, and gold encrusted are examples.green-etched-compote2

This piece is 7 inches across and stands six inches.  The stem has nine lobes and it was moulded in three pieces.

Central Glass closed its doors in 1939, so the piece predates this time and according to Mr. Schmidt was observed in a 1928 catalog.
