Westmoreland Colonial Compote (4)Sometimes you see something online that just grabs you.  I no longer buy compotes as they take up too much space and I don’t really use them.  But this was online and the price was right and I was curious about it.Westmoreland Colonial Compote (3)

The Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum shows the patent for this piece,  dated February 14, 1911.  It was filed by Reuben Haley, an assignor for Westmoreland.  I don’t know what the production dates were, but this piece was likely produced very early twentieth century.Westmoreland Colonial Compote (2)

It is a heavy, statuesque piece that has a real shine to it.  I am showing lots of photos as I wanted to give a sense of its appearance.  The photos don’t really do it justice.

I bought this compote from a vendor in England.  I wonder how it went from Pennsylvania to the U.K.Westmoreland Colonial Compote

Westmoreland Vase with Floral DecorationIsn’t this pretty?  This piece of Westmoreland Glass is also from the popular Paneled Grape #1881 line.  You can see the details of the grapes and leaves at the base of the vase.

It has been handpainted with pink roses, and little sprigs of another blue flower.

I haven’t used this yet, but I bet it displays beautifully with purple flowers.

Westmoreland vase (4)Sometimes I forget that I have hard copy glass references.  I was busily searching for the name of this pattern online, with no luck, when I had an aha moment.  Aha! I have a Westmoreland reference book.  Lo and behold there was my vase in living black and white.

This vase combines the grape details of Westmoreland’s popular Panel and Grape pattern (line 1881) and the beaded edge of the Beaded Edge (line 22) pattern. You can see the one edge in the photo.

It was likely manufactured in the 1950s or 1960s.

Pieces also came with coloured decorations.  I’ve not knowingly observed one in the flesh, but from the photos I have seen, I actually prefer the unpainted pieces like this one.
