Hazel Atlas Sportsmen Series - DogsI picked this up at Around the Block in Toronto.  Anyone local should visit this great antiques consignment store.

This is a very interesting, and I think unique, set.  It is made of multiple pieces – the tumblers, swizzle sticks, ice bowl, tongs and the stand.  All in pristine condition and likely produced in the ’30s.

Hazel Atlas made barware with various decorations.  I don’t know why this is called the “Sportsmen” series.  Maybe dog walking was considered a sport.  Maybe sportsmen drink out of cobalt tumblers.   Who knows.

I posted it online and someone with more expertise than I suggested that this might have been a special order, or fantasy piece.

I love the deep blue, and of course, the dogs!

001Update to my original post of April 22, 2012…

Don’t know why I was confused about the pattern.  This piece, and the piece below are definitely Florentine No. 2 (a/k/a Poppy No. 2).  They were produced by Hazel-Atlas between 1932-1935.

Picked this yellow sherbert up at a nearby thrift shop recently.  Hard to tell from the photo, but the colour is very ‘citrusy’ yellow.

I don’t know if this is Florentine number one or two.  But it’s definitely Florentine. It’s a cute little thing.  If you put your dessert in this sized glass you wouldn’t have to worry about eating too much Hagen Daas!  I picked this up because I don’t have any pieces in the clear.  Oddly enough I’d never seen the clear.  Always interesting to see pieces in the proverbial flesh.

I’ve already posted a piece of Hazel-Atlas’ Florentine No. 2. This piece was in a box lot (as was the other).  Hazel-Atlas made these Depression pieces in the early to mid-thirties.  The difference between number 1 and 2 is explained by SuzieMax (a great source of information) –

“The pattern is the same on both patterns – the outlines and/or shapes of the items are different.  The patterns are considered to be interchangeable and most collectors mix both patterns together.

In Florentine No. 1 the plates and bowls are squared with ruffled or serrated corners.  The feet on cups, sugars, creamers, sherbets, footed tumblers are also all ruffled.  In Florentine No. 2  all edges are smooth and rounded. “

It does have a pretty edge.
