Balda Etch, Etched Glass, Orchid, Plate Etched, Purple Glass, Tumblers

My long suffering spouse and I made a trip to Waterloo this past week.  I stopped into one of my favourite antique stores – St. Jacob’s Antiques Market –  and was surprised to find a set of six of these beautiful tumblers.

I recognized the Balda etch – #410 and knew that these were made by Central Glass Works of Wheeling, West Virginia.

My handy dandy book – Cetnral Glass Works: the Depression Era by Tim Schmidt provided the line #1428.  According to Schmidt this line was produced in the late 1920s/early 1930s.

The colour is refered to an ‘orchid tints’.

Lovely set of eight ounce tumblers.

Depression Glass, Pink Glass, Tumblers

Sometimes glass identification is just a case of serendipity.  I picked up these two tumblers awhile back and had no luck identifying them.  I do not have alot of Depression glass resources, but turned to Warman and couldn’t find the pattern.

One day I was looking at something online and thought, “Hmmmm….this looks familiar!”  Luckily the tumblers were on a shelf right above my head, as opposed to being packed away and sure enough they were the same.  Pulled out my Warman again and sure enough there they were.

The pattern is called Royal Lace and is comprised of delicate flowers and medallions.

This is a piece of Depression era glass, with a manufacturing date range of 1934 – 1941.

Scotty Tumblers (2)It is so handy when a piece has a maker’s mark.  Nice to see Dominion’s (of Montreal) cursive “D’ on the bottom of these tumblers.  There are a number of  variations of the “Scotty Dogs” tumblers made, in the ’40s and ’50s, by companies such as Hazel-Atlas, Federal, Libbey, Bartlett-Collins, etc. and it is difficult to pinpoint which company made which pattern.

The Scotty lines were barware for the most part – tumblers, pitchers, ashtrays, mugs and ice tubs, although Hazel-Atlas made a Scotty baby bottle.

I gather that tumblers such as these, with red checkerboard designs, are referred to as “Purina” style (don’t know why).  Maybe Purina dogfood bags have/had this design.

I like these glasses.  These little pups are frisky and cheerful looking!
