Scotty Tumblers (2)It is so handy when a piece has a maker’s mark.  Nice to see Dominion’s (of Montreal) cursive “D’ on the bottom of these tumblers.  There are a number of  variations of the “Scotty Dogs” tumblers made, in the ’40s and ’50s, by companies such as Hazel-Atlas, Federal, Libbey, Bartlett-Collins, etc. and it is difficult to pinpoint which company made which pattern.

The Scotty lines were barware for the most part – tumblers, pitchers, ashtrays, mugs and ice tubs, although Hazel-Atlas made a Scotty baby bottle.

I gather that tumblers such as these, with red checkerboard designs, are referred to as “Purina” style (don’t know why).  Maybe Purina dogfood bags have/had this design.

I like these glasses.  These little pups are frisky and cheerful looking!

l.E. SMith My pets (1)This is a piece from my wee collection of “things that show Scotties”.  I’ve never had a Scottie, nor intend to acquire one.  I just like the way they, and Westies and some Terriers, look.  I really like my little china “Made in Occupied Japan” piece.  He looks very Sherlock-Holmes like.

Anyway…..this piece is commonly attributed to L.E. Smith made in the 1930s.  It is clear, but at some point had green flashed on to the clear.  I have left the pieces of colour in the jar.  The piece comes in a variety of colours including a pretty cobalt.

However I came across this piece of info recently on the Glass Message board:

l.E. SMith My pets (2)“This powder jar with the three Scottie dogs on the lid was made circa the 1930s, probably by L. E. Smith Glass Company. On pages 284-285 of the (new) book on the L. E. Smith Glass Company, by Tom Felt, it is shown in plates 750 and 751. He says that it “has been attributed to the Diamond Glassware Company. However, I believe that the “My Pet” may be the No. 648 dog powder box found in the 1937 inventory and listed as ‘Greenburg stock.'” (L.E. Smith acquired the Greenburg Glass Company in 1920 and continued producing glass with many of their molds.) Although he doesn’t go so far as to say it absolutely is Smith’s, he believes it to be Smith due to Smith’s predilection for Scotties and because the base of the powder jar is similar to the bases of other known-to-be-Smith powder jars”.”

So………..Greensburg, Diamond, or L.E. Smith?  Whatever – it’s cute as a button.
