bohemia-thistle-pitcher-1I have seen, as mentioned below, quite a number of pieces of stemware, with two types of stems.  One straight and one with wafers.  I have plates that sit beneath stemware, and I have seen decanters and the bowl below.  However this pitcher was a first for me.

I don’t know what its intended use was.  I am thinking that it was used to mix and pour cocktails.  I can see it sitting elegantly on a tray with a swizzle stick and fancy coloured beverages in it.  Very luxe!

Bohemia Thistle Salad Bowl (3)I have seen quite a number of pieces with the Thistle etch, mostly stemware, but I had never seen a bowl.  It is salad bowl sized.

The location of this purchase stymies me right this second, but it is a recent acquisition.  The clarity of the glass, given the size, and its shape, make it quite attractive.

Over the years that I have been selling glass, I have sold more of this pattern, than any other.  I think it was popular in Canada twenty to thirty years ago.  I have often had customers comment that this was their wedding set twenty years ago.Bohemia Thistle Salad Bowl (2)

It occurs to me that I will sell this some day, but actually have no idea where it is!  Must put on thinking cap and find it.

Bohemia Thistle Open Champagnes (3)During our recent Niagara jaunt we went into an antique store in Fort Erie (in the Crystal Beach area).  It has been in the process of closing for two years and everything was 50% off!  With a sign like that, how could one not go in!  I was surprised to see these pieces of Thistle.  The stems on the pieces below are called ‘wafer’.  These pieces have a very delicate looking thin stem and of course the bowl is a different shape.Bohemia Thistle Open Champagnes (4)

I find this line interesting.  So many pieces in various iterations.

Original posting – March 8, 2012

I have had many pieces of this pattern.  In fact the snifters were among the first pieces I bought for myself – from a place in Port Hope.  I’ve had flutes, open champagnes, decanters, snifters, jam jar and cordials.  I think that’s all.  I sold these particular items to a colleague.  Very pretty, although I personally prefer champagne flutes to the open saucers.  Don’t know why.  I guess they seem more elegant to me.  Also, less tippy I think!   Although I’ve come across this pattern a number of times, it is fairly easy to sell the pieces, if you are so inclined.  I’m looking for some wine stems for someone else.

Baccarat Sevigne Champagne (2)Baccarat Sevinge SherbertHard to believe that I have been maintaining this blog for more than 4 years.  Back in the day I posted everyday, sometimes more than once.  Of course I don’t buy enough ‘new’ old glass to keep up that pace of posting!

Since 2012 I have come across a few more pieces of Sevigne.

The photo below is the liquor cocktail.  The top left photo is the white wine, the top right photo is the champagne/tall sherbert and the last photo in this update is, I assume a low sherbert.  Pretty pieces all

Despite the photo of the tall sherbert, I think my photos have gotten better over the years.  I’ve finally learned how to edit.  Took a long while.

Original post – January 21, 2012

This photo does not do justice to this glass.  I bought a bunch – 14ish – at an auction in Brighton (Ontario).  Normally I don’t buy anything I don’t recognize, but they were being sold cheaply at the end of the day.  My research lead me to believe that they are French – Baccarat and that the etch is called Sevigne.  I’ve seen various dates for their end of production.  But it would appear that the end of the line was late 19th century or early 20th century.  I have (am guessing) white wines and champagnes.  I never use these as they are way too small.  If I’m going to pour wine, it’s likely into a water goblet.  Saves time in the refilling.  They are very dainty.

Heisey #3389, Etch #480 (1)In November I was performing an update when my site crashed after experiencing a fatal error.

I didn’t know how to fix it. I wasn’t too bothered as I wondered if I was interested in keeping it going anyway! After all, it is not the Huffington Post! My readership is slim, but…what the heck…..

The wonderful people at Dreamhost – my hosting site fixed it and it is live again.

In the intervening months I have bought, and sold, some beautiful pieces. I will start posting them again.

Seems fitting to start with a beautiful piece from  my favourite company – Heisey.Heisey #3389, Etch #480 (2)

The shape/blank is #3389 – Dusquesne and the etch is #480 – Normandie.

The production years for this line were 1935 – 1938.

The stem on this champagne is neat.  It has ribbed edges with pretty detailing at the base of the stem.

The entire shape is gorgeous.

These glasses are particularly bright, don’t know why.  Very pretty.
