Original post of August 29, 2012

While we were in the U.S. in July I saw quite a number of these goblets.  I had never seen them before.  They are marked <Avon>.  Very heavy glass in a deep blue.  Avon has definitely expanded its catalogue since I was a girl!

This is what I have discovered, according to the online article – The History of Fostoria Coin Glass by Noreen Braman, eHow Contributor:

“During the 1970s and 1980s, Fostoria and Avon joined forces and took advantage of the popularity of both Avon and Fostoria collectible pieces. Fostoria produced numerous items exclusively for Avon, including a line of Christmas ornaments, soap dishes, candleholders, goblets and other stemware. In 1997, they produced several Coin Glass items for Avon’s anniversary, including a bowl and footed compote. Other items, such as a set of goblets and a pitcher featuring George and Martha Washington, also had medallion-type decorations that were reminiscent Coin Glass.”

Avon Snow OwlOver the years I have collected personal treasures for myself and my children and stored them in big plastic totes.

I have been trying to clean up my own totes – give away some items, trash others, etc.  I came across this glass owl recently.

I cannot recall who gave this to me and/or when I received it.  Years ago , as in 40 – yikes! – I was a brownie leader.  At first I was a “Snowy Owl”, then I earned my “Tawny Owl” designation.  In fact I recently gave my pin to my daughter who is a guide leader.  Anyway……..I started receiving lots of ‘owl-themed’ gifts.  Candles, jewelery, macrame, etc. etc.  I think this is likely a recent gift, but this is the only reason I think I have this.  Or……maybe it’s been in my tote for awhile.

In any event, it is an Avon powder container called Snow Owl.  Piercing blue eyes!

|I have a number of glass animals that I am going to have to photograph.

Avon, Slag Glass

Avon PowdersThese pieces are common – you see them all over the place.  I picked them up because they are pretty and they suit a little shelf in my spare bedroom.

I don’t know a thing about them, just what I’ve read online.  They were made for Avon in the 1970s – company unknown.  Fostoria made other pieces for Avon, but I don’t know if these were attributed to Fostoria or not.

The piece on the left was used for powder.  The jug on the right was used to hold “Skin So Soft” Bath Oil (I have two of these for some unknown reason!)

A pretty turquoise bit of decor.
