Portieux Vallerysthal White Vase (3)As stated (below) I had regrets that I sold my blue vase and eventually I did replace it with another one in blue.

I found out that they were made in other colours as well and I bought this one in white/cream/custard.  It is slightly shorter than the blue vase, but just as gorgeous.

I ‘think’ there is one in green, but wouldn’t bet money on it.  If so, however, I ‘have’ to have one.

The Canadian/US dollar exchange rate is brutal however, so it could be awhile!

Portieux Vallerysthal VaseI know this sounds silly, but every so often I sell a piece of glass and it makes me feel a twinge of regret.  This is one of those pieces.  I have had it for almost a year and a half now.  I can’t recall how long it has been for sale, but it’s been awhile.

I could never understand why it didn’t sell.  I thought this would be snatched up right away.  It is a gorgeous piece.  The colour is very attractive and the details are most interesting.  Maybe the photo didn’t really represent the vase well enough.Portieux Vallerysthal Vase (2)

It has been a fixture on my “blue’ shelf……..my shelf of blue glass……and I will miss seeing it there.  Yes, I know I didn’t have to sell it.  But…..now there will be space for another blue piece.  Well, at least for awhile.

The only good thing, is that anyone reading this post likely has their own glass ‘thing’ and will completely understand!

It is heading off to beautiful British Columbia.  I hope the buyer enjoys it!

Original September 3, 2012 posting

This weekend we moved my youngest from one apartment to another in Ottawa.  We took the scenic route home and stopped at a few shops en route.  We went into a great antique market in Perth.  What a neat little town, definitely worth a longer visit.

I was taken with this pretty blue vase.  Didn’t know a thing about it, but liked the goat’s heads on the sides.

I posted the photo on the Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum site and a gentleman indicated that he thought (subject to verification) that the piece is as I’ve indicated – French,  and perhaps 1907/1908.

Whatever – it is pretty and I will enjoy it.

Empoli Opalescent Vase

Unknown Opalescent vaseI found this vase on the weekend in Pickering.  It caught my eye (the second time around the Market).  I thought it had the look of the Foval line of Fry Glass.  So….of course it came home with me.

It’s not leaning (I was).

I posted it and found out that it is likely Empoli Glass from Italy.  I don’t know a thing about Italian Glass, but this is what a quick search on the ‘net tells me:

Empoli glass – When most people think of Italian glass, they think of the many manufacturers based on the Venetian island of Murano. But there is another area of Italy with a long history of glass production – the town of Empoli, in the Tuscany region, near Florence. There is evidence of glassware being produced in Empoli as far back as the thirteenth century. There are two main types of Empoli glass – “Verde” and “Cased”. Verde (Italian for green) glass takes its name from the traditional green colour of Empoli glass, which was a result of the content of local sand used for glass production.”
This isn’t green and I don’t think it’s cased either.  Opalescent or opaline.  I saw some examples, with some resemblance, that are attributed to Stelvia (Società Toscana Esercizio Lavorazione Vetri Industriali e Artistici).  According to the 20th Century glass this company was in existence from the 1950s-2001.Unknown Opalescent vase (2)
This is an interesting piece.  It is a colour-shifter.  Dramatically changes hues depending on the lighting.  In the second photo you can see that the vase glows amber when exposed to natural lighting.  Sometimes it takes on a very blue hue, but most of the time it looks pinkish.
I am going to keep this for now and keep trying to identify it.  I still would like a piece of Foval though!

Fenton Water Lily Amber Compote

This pretty compote has an opalescent ruffled rim.  The amber is very rich and the contrast with the ruffle is very attractive.  I bought this recently, although I don’t recall where – perhaps in Fenelon Falls.

The pattern is quite pronounced – open water lily blooms and another flower head in profile.  I can’t decide whether it is a closed water lily or a tulip.

The piece is signed.  It has the word Fenton, enclosed in an oval, with the teensiest number “8” beneath the oval.  Carnival Glass 101 identifies this mark to indicate a production date of the 1980s.  Check this site out if you are trying to identify a glass mark- it’s great!
