Update to Fostoria or Westmoreland Indian Chief Vases

Westmoreland Indian VaseAs I had mentioned in the original post I had turned to the Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum for advice.  I just noticed last night that one of the members had confirmed that these pieces were made by Westmoreland.

The member, Mr. G. Jones,  posted  this image from the 905 Westmoreland Specialty Company Sales Catalogue.

Always nice to have an item verified.

Fostoria Indian VasesI bought these locally.  I often wonder how pieces end up where they do.  These pieces in particular intrigue me.  I think they are early twentieth century.  Not uncommon, as they are available online, but not common either.  How did they end up in south/central Ontario?

My guy has M’ikmaq blood and I thought he would enjoy having these two proud men in the house.

I posted them on my favourite glass site – Everyday and Elegant Glass Forum – asking if someone could suggest some reading about them.  I was advised that these pieces are either Fostoria or Westmoreland and that there has been little written to distinguish one company’s pieces from the other.

Likely I will never know for sure, but they are pretty neat.

Heisey Trident Candleholder with Gardenia Etch (1)This is line #134 Trident with the Gardenia plate etch.  I still have the piece with the Belle le Rose etch, so now I have a kind of ‘matched’ pair.

I see on the Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum that the etch is also referred to as ‘Camellia”.  I actually thought it was a rose when I picked it up.  Goes to show what I know about flowers!

This is the base of a two candle, candle stick holder.  I bought this online on a whim.  I had been looking through books and saw a drawing of this etch.  It intrigued me so I ran a search and bought this piece.  I have one other candle stick holder, but they aren’t really my thing.  You don’t see this etch often.  It’s not super old – late thirties, early forties, but doesn’t come up for sale often.  I’d love to see stems of this etch.

Mere's Green SwanMy mother loves glass images of swans and has a collection of a number of very pretty items.  This one (posted some time ago) is my unidentified  favourite.  The photo doesn’t do it justice.

Unfortunately it took a fall and a wing broke off.  My mom repaired it and it displays beautifully.

I have added to her collection on and off over the years.  This weekend we were visiting her and I took this Westmoreland piece.  Westmoreland SwansI wondered if she would accept it as she has sworn, many times, that she is DONE, DONE, DONE, collecting swans.

Alas…it did not make the trip home with us and I assume has been allocated a space.

It is a pretty little item – three swan heads decorate its sides.

Kovar’s Westmoreland Glass: 1950-1984 assigns the use and indicates that this piece was made in many colours.

She also identifies that this was also reproduced in milk glass, along with other colours.   Nonetheless I am going to assume it is Westmoreland, despite a lack of mark.
