Had a lovely drive and dropped in at the Main Thru Church Antiques Mall in Orono.  Picked up this pretty goblet.  The amberina colour is rich and quite spectacular.

This piece has the ruffled edge and while it is a goblet, could be used as a really pretty little vase.

Yesterday our larger neighbourhood held a multi-block yard sale.  We do this collectively this the first weekend in June annually.

This year I bought only a very few things from my neighbours (some years it is really bad!).  Sold a few items.  Our friend Dave came over to sell a few things of his own.  He had picked up a couple pieces of glass that I acquired.  This is one of them.

L.E. Smith Grape Goblet (3)I was taken by this shade of blue – very pretty.  A cross between cobalt and turquoise.

Replacements.com calls the shade Vintage-Blue.  The grapes and leaves are quite obvious.

I’ve been trying to determine the age of this piece.  I’ve seen it sold online as a 1960s piece.  But I don’t really know.

 

Green Hocking Cameo Goblet and Pitcher

I have been trolling about local MaxSold auctions for awhile but had never bought anything.  A set of 6 goblets and the pitcher came up and caught my eye.  I normally don’t buy Depression glass but…..they ware attractive and several bids later, they were mine.  I only had a 20 minute drive to pick them up.  Pretty seamless process – kudos MaxSold.  Makes it easy to spend money!

Turns out the pieces were made by Hocking Glass of Lancaster, Ohio, between 1930-1934 (according to a Warman’s Depression Glass Field Guide).

While there have been a few reproductions the original pieces were made in crystal, green, pink and yellow.

The pattern is called Cameo but is also known, for obvious reasons, as ‘Ballerina’ and ‘Dancing Girl’.

The pitcher comes with the ‘roped’ edge as seen here and without.

 

Northwood Grape & Gothic Arches Goblet – Custard Glass

IMG_4776This piece was produced by Northwood in Wheeling, West Virginia in the early years of the twentieth century.

According to the Encyclopedia of Victorian Colored Pattern Glass, Book 4: Custard glass from A to Z by William Heacock:IMG_4778

“…sometimes stained with nutmeg brown, and sometimes simply trimmed in gold.  Some pieces have been found iridised with a pearl-like finish, causing word to spread that it was some form of rare “custard carnival”. ”

This piece has the nutmeg finish.  The colour varies depending on the light.  The first photo shows backlighting from sunshine.  The second photo is daytime room lighting and the last shows the effect of blacklight.

I always find it difficult to think of the age of pieces – over 100 years old – with no damage!
