Unknown Sherbert with Pretty StemI took half a day vacation on Friday and decided to make a Value Village run before I headed home.  I saw four of these sherberts and after resisting them during an earlier visit, cracked and acquired.

I’ve made a pact with myself NOT to buy anything that isn’t either easily identifiable or isn’t etched.  These are neither – at least, not easily identified by me.

But………They have a beautifully shaped bowl, with delicate glass, are pristine, look to be great quality, and are just so darned appealing.  I don’t think the photo does the stem justice.

Perhaps the detail on the stem will some day lead to a provenance.  But for now…..they are stuck on a shelf being admired.

Unknown Stem with Knot (2)I bought two of these pieces in Brighton at the auction house’s yard sale.  I thought that it would be easy to identify them, with the distinctive looking stem.

Replacements calls the shape #325 and the etch #325-6.  I only have one Bryce book and it doesn’t appear in that title.  So…who knows?

I think this a cocktail glass.  It has a medium optic and is very attractive.Unknown Stem with Knot

Unknown Etch on Unknown StemMy interest in these needle etches remains unabated and I don’t  know why. The odds of ever identifying their provenance is slim.  If you are lucky enough to find an etched stem on a unique stem/blank, then the task is easier, but still………..challenging.

This particular glass does have some unique features to the stem, although they are difficult to see in the photo.  Where the stem and the bowl are connected, there is some ‘carving’ (not the correct word, I’m sure).  May make it easier to track down the production company of the blank at least.  I think it is safe to say that it was likely made prior to 1940.Unknown Etch on Unknown Stem 2

I often wonder what on earth I am ever going to do with these single stems?????  But I can’t bear to toss them.  Maybe someone will start a museum of unknown needle-etched glasses and I can donate my entire collection.
