Spread the love

Recently I had some communication with someone who was interested in pieces of Corn Flower cut on the Candlewick line by Imperial Glass.  I was pulling out pieces that I had forgotten that I have.  They are quite lovely.  This three part relish is 11-12 inches in diameter.

Although this piece has the ‘beads’ that resemble Candlewick I do not believe that it is from Imperial.  Instead I think this is “Boule” made in Czechoslovakia.

Krista Taylor in her book Canadian Identification & Price Guide to W.J. Hughes Corn Flower Glass says (p. 50):

“….made with larger beads than Candlewick and a seam around the central under-part of the beads.  Items of this line were cut with a copy of “Corn Flower” and with the Crystalware label by R.G. Sheriff.”

See this online article by Walter Lemiski for some interesting information about R.G. “Bobby” Sheriff.

There is a photo of this relish in Walter T. Leminski’s book Elegant Glass with Corn Flower.  His piece has more flowers – three sets with two flowers – than this piece. My recollection is that I have read that older pieces were more heavily decorated.  He does have a photo of a smaller 8 inch relish with the three single flowers.

Don’t know if this is a Hughes or Sheriff cutting, but it is pretty.  Very heavy piece with quite high dividers.  I actually used it the other day, so I thank my correspondent for reminding me that I own this.
