I have bought so much glass over the last few months it has been quite alarming! I almost think I am developing a glass addiction issue. Ha ha! That ship sailed a really long time ago. But I have bought some items I have never had, along with a few that I have owned and lots in colour. I finally have started taking some photos.
This interesting piece was acquired at the relatively new antique mart in Ajax – the Vintage Vendors. I had never visited since its opening but found myself in Ajax last week. What a great place! I was very impressed. It is nicely curated, clean and has a great variety of items, including a nice selection of glass.
I was sure that this was a piece of Portieux Vallerysthal (PV), name unknown. I have subsequently found that Imperial glass made a piece that is similar or in fact exact. It seems to have been called ‘Drama’ or ‘Devil and Roses’. I don’t know its real name or line. But since there is no Imperial mark on my vase I am assuming that it is the earlier piece by PV.
It is interesting with faces of gargoyles/devils on two sides and flowers on the other two sides. I’d sure like to see it in PV’s other colours.

The photos do not really do this stem justice. This is a lovely piece of glass. I bought four water goblets (I assume) online ‘on spec’ knowing that they had the ‘HAWKES’ signature.
Unfortunately I have not been able to identify the provenance of the blank or the name of the cutting.
Here is an interesting online article about Thomas Gibbons Hawkes and his company.
