Cut Butter Dish (2)The last (for now) of my cut pieces.  I rarely use butter – we are margarine people.  But at holiday time I like to have butter.  I used to have a very pretty pinwheel dish that had belonged to my mother-in-law, but I gave it to my son.  He has an appreciation for fine glass and vintage ‘stuff’, although I seem to acquire “manly” things for him – clocks, radios, cameras.

I cannot remember where I acquired this piece, and I’m not even sure that the top and bottom are a match.  But…..I like them in any event.Cut Butter Dish

Yesterday I did a nice little route.  Two Bible Mission Thrift Shops, one Value Village, and my favourite antique store.  Picked up a variety of pieces.  I got three of these wine glasses.  They were marked with the name”Boda.”  I’m not sure if they are Kosta Boda, or from the Boda Factory which was bought out by Kosta Boda.  I have an email in to them to see if they can identify the age of the glass.  Yet again a vendor on ebay provided the pattern name – Rosita.  They have a nice heft and a beautiful ring.  Not sure what I will do with them.  They are too small to use (you’d have to be filling the glass repeatedly!) and I have no interest in acquiring any others.  But….I always enjoy the opportunity to find out a little more about some glass.

p.s.  Two weeks later – I bought 6 more at the same shop. Thought I wouldn’t, but now I have a set I can sell some day!

I don’t generally collect cut crystal.  But one day I realized that my guests were forced to drink their non-wine beverages out of Ikea glasses.  There is nothing wrong with that of course, but it just didn’t seem fair.  Always nice to have an excuse to broaden

one’s holdings.  Very difficult to find nice vintage glasses for mixed drinks.  I came across these in an antique store in Orono, Ontario.  Orono has turned into a little haven for antiquers in the GTA area.  I’m not 100% sure that they are Balmoral.  I always find it hard to identify cut pieces – so many cross thatches!  If they are Balmoral, they aren’t particularly old – about 25-35 years old.

I had always thought of Royal Doulton as a maker of china.  But these are marked.  I like the heft of these glasses.  They feel very solid in the hand.  I have to admit that they really don’t ‘spark’ me, but they are shiny and I guess you gotta love that.
