Colored Glass, Coloured Glass, Cut to Clear, Decanter, Red Glass, Topaz Glass

This set of five cut glasses and matching decanter was likely produced around the mid 20th Century, but that is really just a guess on my part. The label on it reads that it was made in Czechoslovakia so that dates the set to the early 1990s at the latest.

The photos do not do this set justice. It was very difficult to capture the true colours.

The glass is an amber or topaz with a red stain. The flowers and foliage are cut to the amber. The red has darker undertones, it is not crimson or scarlet. You can see the amber in the neck and in the stopper. There are lots of gilt/gold decorations on both the decanter and the tumblers. It truly is a lovely set.

I saw something similar online attributed as Egermann Glass, but I have no idea if this is Egermann or even Egermann style.

Unknown Czech Decanter (1)Some time ago I was watching a piece on ebay that was very similar to this one.  I went back and forth on buying it.  For some reason I was really attracted to the photos.  In the end I didn’t buy it.  I didn’t need it, and I thought, from experience, that it would be difficult to eventually resell.

A few weeks ago I came across this set at Around the Block.  I was taken by the colour and gravitated to it right away.  While I still don’t need it, and I probably won’t be able to resell it eventually, I decided to buy it.  It wasn’t super expensive, it looks gorgeous and I can always gift it to someone.

The colour is very rich and the camera (a/k/a the photographer – me) doesn’t really do it justice.  This photo doesn’t show the richness of the red.  I took the close-up to give a better sense.  Still there is alot of ‘brown’ in the shade and I am sure that there is an appropriate name for this tint – cognac?  Maybe too brown.  Unknown Czech Decanter (2)

There is a label that says “Made in Czechoslovakia” but other than that, I likely will never know much about this pretty set.

Paden City Spring Orchard Cocktail (4)Another little piece of Spring Orchard (etch #545).  This is the cocktail glass with a ‘trumpet’ or ‘corset’ shape.

The glass of this piece is very clear and particularly bright.  I think the pattern of this reverse acid etch is quite clear in this shot.

Paden City Spring Orchard Decanter 6This caught my eye online.  Pretty etch composed of birds and flowers.  Paden City Spring Orchard Decanter 6I have tried to show the detail with this little close up.

The etch is Spring Orchard which was made after 1935.  The Paden City company, from Paden City, West Virginia, closed in 1951.

I have seen a reference to a Cordial, Tilt Decanter in this line.  I am guessing that this is what this piece is.  It’s not a large piece – only stands 6 inches to the top of the handle and is 4 inches wide.

It is pretty.
