I have just discovered that I have been spelling the name ‘Carcassonne’ incorrectly for years.  Only used one ‘n’ instead of two.  Got it now!

I have had this line with the Titania etch and saw this goblets recently and was intrigued by the plate etch – Lafayette – #451.

According to the Encyclopedia of Heisey Glassware volume one: Etchings & Carvings by Louise W, Ream, Neila M. Bredehoft and Thomas H. Bredehoft the etch was in production between 1930 and 1937.  Given that Carcassonne was in production between 1930-1941, this stem is at least 84 years old!  I bought a set of four and they are pristine.  Someone(s) have taken good care of them all these years.

The authors also shared this quote from a Heisey ad:  “Most delightful is the chintz pattern etching in Early American spirit of the fine lead blown glassware…composed of a series of old chintz patterns artistically executed.  A ship in full sail, a man on horseback, a Colonial girl, a pagoda are among the motifs admirably used in the general pattern.”

The etch was also used on the Empress line – #1401.

This goblet is a tall goblet.  There was a shorter one with the same 11 ounce capacity.  I think I prefer the taller style.

The Carcassonne line also came in flamingo, sahara, cobalt bowl/crystal stem and foot, and with an alexandrite bowl/crystal stem and foot. Scarce in amber and rare in a combination of sahara and alexandrite.

Heisey #3390, Carcassone with Etch #448 in Sahara (5)Isn’ t this cute?  This is a little sherberts in Heisey’s line #3390 – Carcassonne.  I really like the square feet.  This line was in production from  1930 – 1938.

They are etched with etch #448 – Old Colony.  I have acquired water goblets on a different blank with this etch – yet to be seen.  I like the bead detail on the stem as well.

The colour is Heisey’s yellow – Sahara.  Each company’s colours are slightly different.  I find that the yellows aren’t my favourite.  I like the blues and greens the best I think.

Nonetheless these are really sweet.

Baccus, Oak Leaves, Sherberts

These stems are long gone, but it was only today that I came across an attribution.  Appears that they were made in the ’70s by a company names Thomas Crystal, possibly from Germany.

Don’t know anything about the company but I think that the pattern name is Baccus.

Amazing how you can come across something.  Good excuse to be online!

Unfortunately I am no closer to identifying this stem, but….I recently came across one additional blank (on the left) with the same details on the stem.  I think that this is a wine glass (beside the original sherbert).  Same thin glass, without flaws.  Still love to know the origin.

Original post – January 24, 2013

These are pretty cool stems – I have four.  Different from anything else I own, and normally I wouldn’t give them a second look…..but obviously I did and I am glad I did.

I am guessing that they are sherberts/ice cream dishes, but of course they can be used for anything you want.  They stand 4 7/8 inches tall with openings of 3 3/4 inches.

Unknown Pressed Glass (2)The stem/base is decorated with hobnails, flowers and what appears to be oak leaves.  The stem is solid which makes the glass relatively heavy, and stable on a table.  Tee hee.

The bowl is a lovely shape.  Even though the ‘pinging’ of the bowl doesn’t really mean anything, I always ‘ping’ mine.  This has a gorgeous tone.

I am guessing that I will never find anything out about these glasses. Unknown Pressed Glass

I often wonder how the rims of old sherberts have remained intact with spoons being banged against them.  I figure that no one ever actually used them for desserts, just for drinking out of, or for display.

No idea how old these might be.  Guessing (wildly) 1940s-1960s.

Picked up this lovely amber centre handle server recently. I think the production dates were 1927-1941. The pattern is #2375 Fairfax.  This is the second one that I have found in amber.  Don’t know how many colours the piece was made in.

Original March 15, 2014 Post

Fostoria VernonThe only coloured pieces by Fostoria that I have owned were stems in the Canary shade.  I bought these online and they were more beautiful than I had expected.  The green is very rich.  Not a deep forest green, but not as much yellow as some other greens.

In Hazel Weatherman’s book, Fostoria, its first fifty years, Ms. Weatherman reports that Fostoria introduced colour, including the colour green, to its pieces in 1924. Fostoria Vernon

The Vernon design, plate etching number 277 was introduced in 1927 and discontinued in 1934.  It was produced in orchid (1927-28), azure (1928-1934), amber (1927-1934) and green (1927-1934).

This line of tableware had many pieces.

Although the etch is not one of my all time favourites, it is attractive.  However it is the colour makes these stems very appealing.
