Original post of August 29, 2012

While we were in the U.S. in July I saw quite a number of these goblets.  I had never seen them before.  They are marked <Avon>.  Very heavy glass in a deep blue.  Avon has definitely expanded its catalogue since I was a girl!

This is what I have discovered, according to the online article – The History of Fostoria Coin Glass by Noreen Braman, eHow Contributor:

“During the 1970s and 1980s, Fostoria and Avon joined forces and took advantage of the popularity of both Avon and Fostoria collectible pieces. Fostoria produced numerous items exclusively for Avon, including a line of Christmas ornaments, soap dishes, candleholders, goblets and other stemware. In 1997, they produced several Coin Glass items for Avon’s anniversary, including a bowl and footed compote. Other items, such as a set of goblets and a pitcher featuring George and Martha Washington, also had medallion-type decorations that were reminiscent Coin Glass.”

Westmoreland Cat (2)What a great trip we had to Washington, D.C. and points in between.  I didn’t keep track of the thrift shops, antique shops and flea markets that we visited, but there were lots.  My guy is very patient.

I brought back more than the usual number of items and have lots of new (old) pieces to post.Westmoreland Cat (3)

I always look for the special piece that really peaks my interest (that’s affordable).  I didn’t find anything until yesterday at the very last shop we visited in Waterdown, New York.  It’s a beauty, but I am gong to try to identify it before it is posted.

In the interim, here’s a cute little cat on nest.  Made by Westmoreland CatWestmoreland, it has opalescent edges and ears.

Quite the sad expression on its little face.

I’ve posted the mark.  It was created by Westmoreland’s final owner, David Grossman.  The Grossman mark consists of the name Westmoreland encircling three vertical lines.  I know it’s hard to pick up the details in this photo.  This mark was used between 1983-1984, when the company closed.  So this little kitty is 30+ years old!

Center Handled PlateI know that I always say that a piece is particularly attractive.  Broken record!  But…..this piece IS particularly appealing.  It’s not breathtakingly beautiful, nor is it unique.  But, there is just ‘something’ about this server.

I think it might be the shade of blue which highlights the floral etches that makes it stand out.

I posted this online for an ID.  I didn’t receive much feedback – some comment that it might be a Westmoreland piece.

Center Handled Plate (2)I took a peek at the website of the National Westmoreland Glass Collectors Club to see if I could find a match.  I did not, but I did find a link that allows you to seek a glass ID.  What a wonderful service – very prompt.  This is what I was told:

“I  believe the server blank was made by Lancaster Glass Company and not Westmoreland because Westmoreland never made a server with the straight handle.  Westmoreland’s servers always had a slight curve.  If you check the 1929 sales catalogue in the album section of the page you will can locate what the Westmoreland server looked like. ”

How great was that?  Very accommodating customer service.

I only have one Lancaster text, and couldn’t find it in there.  So…..this pretty piece has to remain an unknown for now.
