Central Glass 432 (3)I am sitting in my little office on the second floor of our house.  I can see snow on the roofs out the window.  The window is freezing up and the wind is howling.  It is very cold outside.  I am happy to be inside with my little hobby.  I doubt that I will venture out today.

Last weekend however, we made a trip to Around the Block.  What a great store!!!!  I only picked up a couple pieces and this was one.  The rich dark topaz/amber caught my eye, as did the pretty shape and the dainty etch.

There is some confusion around its identification.  I found a sample of the etch fairly easily – Central Glass’ etch #432 Hester.  I only have one reference book – Tim Schmidt’s Central Glass Works: the Depression era and I couldn’t find the blank.  I posted a query on The Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum asking for a line number. Someone suggested that this piece was a mayonnaise dish and was instead made by the Imperial Glass Company – Etch DE 432 – Love Bird.   The line numbers are so close!

From Schmidt’s book he quotes an  article in the Crockery and Glass Journal, March 1940:

“The equipment of the Central Glass Works, Wheeling W. Va., was acquired by the Imperials Glass Corp., who will transfer most of it to Bellaire, Ohio, where the plant is situated.”Central Glass 432 (5)

Central ceased operations in 1939.  It is not inconceivable that this piece was produced by Imperial if it assumed Central’s molds and etching plates.

I hope someone who knows more than me (almost everyone) will provide some information.  In the mean time, this is a very pretty piece.

Animals, Birds

I picked up two of these stems at a local thrift shop.  Ordinarily I would never buy anything that was marked with a message, but I knew I had seen the bird stems before and I wanted to identify them.

This is what I read on a couple of online posts.  “Old Crow Cocktail Stems were made by Libbey for the Kentucky’s Old Crow Distillery, maker of Old Crow Bourbon.” There’s lots of information online about the Distillery.  Check out the listing at Abandoned.  Abandoned itself looks like an interesting website.  It bills itself as:

“…….a resource that provides access to thousands of photographs and countless locations across the United States that are abandoned, endangered, active and demolished. From pure silk mills to World War II-era ammunition plants to simple, well-crafted residences, Abandoned aims to document that of which is being forgotten.”

Always something to learn!

Birds, Vase

News Flash – a knowledgeable Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum participant gave me the following information – “Its a well known Czech vase often found with a fake R. Lalique signature. Its called the Doves vase & comes in two styles, the one you have & one thats similar to the small Tiffin Poppy vase.”

I’ve been looking for more information, so far to no avail.  It’s great that I didn’t pay a great deal of money for this.  It’s pretty and I will still enjoy using it.  Wouldn’t it have been fab to have found a Lalique though????

Yesterday morning I was looking at a photo of the most beautiful covered jar called Hummingbird with Roses by Consolidated Lamp & Glass

Company.  Later in the day we went out to Orono as the shops were holding an Antique and Art festival.  Too bad it rained!  Nonetheless we wandered about and I came across this beautiful vase in the style of the jar.

The price tag was marked Tiffin and there were no markings on the vase.  I bought it knowing that it was an “unknown” as it is very beautiful and different.

I have posted it on the Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum and asked for “Help!”  A responder said that it is not Consolidated, Phoenix or Gillinder.  He thinks it may be European.  I will continue to look as it is very interesting.  But as always…if anyone knows, please share.
