Bohemia Queen's Lace Decanter

Could be Bohemia Crystal in the Etoile pattern. Another identification to consider (March 23, 2015)

I have posted this pattern a few times. At one time I wondered if this could be a pattern that I have seen called Cleo, and also called Massenet, through online sources.  The company to which it was attributed is Saint-Louis Crystal.

I have few resources about European glass/crystal manufacturers, so I poked around the ‘net a bit.  This is what Saint-Louis’ site says:

“By letters patent dated 1767, Louis XV gave Münzthal the prestigious name of Verrerie Royale de Saint-Louis (Saint-Louis Royal Glassworks). Fifteen years later, the formula for producing crystal was discovered by François de Beaufort. The Verrerie Royale de Saint-Louis was renamed the Cristallerie Royale de Saint-Louis.”

The decoration on this decanter is fine, but I don’t think the glass nor the decoration are particularly high quality.  So…the mystery continues.  I still think this pattern is Bohemian Queen’s Lace…..or close enough!

Original March 3, 2013 posting.

Bohemia Crystal Queen's Lace (2)I have posted this etch before as I have the pattern in a number of pieces.  These two are recently acquired.

However, over on the  Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum there was an interesting discussion about the various companies, American and European, that made very similar etches.Bohemia Crystal Queen's Lace (3)

As you can see, from the label, these are definitely European.  I will have to look at my pieces again as they are on different blanks/shapes.

Bohemia Crystal Queen's LaceThe Great Glass website identifies the label as coming from:

GlassExport, Prague, Czechoslovakia (19502-1970s), (known to have exported glassware from Železný Brod).

Always something to learn!

Paden City Gold Spring Orchard Decanter

Update to my post of March 20, 2014…….I gather that the line is actually #211 – Spire.  I gather there is a lack of evidence to validate the line number, but that it is commonly assumed, by folks who are in the know, that this is #211, despite what my text indicates.

—————————————-My handy dandy Paden City reference tells me that this is a reverse etch that includes daisies and swallows.  I can’t determine what a ‘reverse etch’ actually is!  My not so handy dandy Glass Dictionary doesn’t have any information.  I’ll have to poke around the ‘net when I have more time.

005 (2)

In any event, the etch is quite deep.  The cordials are  the #991 Penny Line blank.  The decanter is from the #215 Glades line.  The piece are gold encrusted.  I think that the gold on these pieces is likely faded from years of washing.  It is intact, but I imagine it was originally brighter.  Still very pretty.

I had a piece of Spring Orchard, a decanter from a different line, that I sold.  I was somewhat sorry as it was pretty, and different.  Must be that darned unknown reverse etching!  I think I may admire these for awhile.

Don’t know how old they are.  Paden City closed its doors in 1951.  So they are at least older than I am.  So…….they are definitely vintage!

Unknown Etch with Swag and Flowers 2Yet another update on the original April 13 post and then the August 31st update.  I bought six of these stems (the one on the left.)  Now that I have these six, likely clarets or sherries, the one wine, two sherberts and a decanter, I practically have a set!  Still don’t know what they are of course.  I think I will try to to sell these glasses with the decanter.  Too cute.

Update – During our recent Niagara trip I added to my collection of ‘pieces with this unknown etch, unknown blank.’  They were in a shop in Fort Erie.

I don’t know why I feel compelled to do so, but….there it is.  They are sherberts/dessert dishes I imagine.  Very dainty.Floral Needle Etch

Ok – after posting this 5 minutes ago, I decided to troll for the image of the goblet to add to this post.  Here it is.15

Original post – April 11, 2013

142I have long had a single water goblet with this etch.  I have no idea where it is and I can’t find a photo.  Likely in a box somewhere.  Anyway…..came across this decanter on our Niagara trip.

144 I was so surprised to find the etch replicated.  I certainly didn’t need any more decanters, especially one without a stopper.  but I couldn’t resist, since I have the one stem.  Sheesh – how lame is that?????

Pretty, isn’t it?
